With everything that has been going on with this whole Covid scare, I was suddenly forced to homeschool two children while trying to make sure a toddler doesn’t burn the house down. That infuriated me to the point well, that is another post in and of itself but I realized that my life had gotten way more difficult than it already was. I needed a pep talk. I needed to know that I was going to make it through this. I knew I would, I just needed a book (or two) to help me through. There are so many self-help books out there how was I going to know which ones worked? I needed some self-help books worth reading, ones that inspired me and actually made me feel better and enhance my happiness.
Self-help books for self-talk
With this time at home and our whole world changing into a different routine I have been diving into some reflection and using some self-help books for inspiration. I started with UnF*ck Yourself
by Gary John Bishop. I actually used my free Audible trial for this. For those of you who are living under a rock and don’t know what Audible is, it’s a service from Amazon that puts your books on a recording so you can listen to them rather than read them. I figured if I was going to be home with three children 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, I would have to listen to my books. It took me a couple of days to actually remember that I had purchased it and fit it into my life.
The first day I listened, I was prepping dinner and I told my Amazon Eco Show to “play my audible book” and it just started playing! Genius. I was actually able to get through three chapters. This started my journey to really take a look at “self talk” which is basically what you tell yourself, you know that little voice in your head that is always saying something but no one else hears? Yup, that one. A lot of the times you don’t realize what you are actually saying to yourself. Most of the time you are talking yourself out of things or telling yourself excuses not to do something or making excuses for why something has happened.
The first thing I learned from Bishops book is willingness. He starts to turn your thinking into “I am willing.” You first have to think about what you want in life. If you want to be a millionaire, are you willing to put in the work and 60-80 hours a week to do what it takes? Or in come instances, it might be what you are not willing to do that will help you manifest into the life you want. Are you willing to settle in that crappy job that you are overqualified for? Are you willing to stay in an unhealthy relationship or are you NOT willing to let yourself be treated with disrespect anymore? At the end of this book you will definitely have had some life lessons that seem so simple and almost like common sense but when put into place can really make a huge difference in your life
Self-help Books for Cultivating & Motivation
After completing that book I was inspired to do some more spiritual awakening research. I consider myself very spiritual but I really have a hard time with orchestrated religion. There has been a lot of talk about mindfulness lately so next, I went for Manafest Now by Idil Ahmed. I also did the audible version which, was my last book in the trial. I was kind of sad I didn’t have any books left so I decided go to with the subscription because it’s the only way I can actually get to read books these days. I listed to it in the car, on my way to run errands and then had it on my phone and listened while grocery shopping. For some reason, I really enjoyed listening to this while driving. This book is more about turning what is in your mind into a reality and for some reason, driving not only kept me focused, but it helped motivate me. He really shifts your thinking from thinking about it to being about it. This is a real game changer if you were always aspiring to do something but never really put it into action, or if you are a natural negative thinker. It is about thinking your dreams into reality. The theory is training your mental energy to focus on your goals. This is about taking your dreams and aspirations and making them a reality and changing your thoughts into the ones you want in order to create a beautiful life for yourself.
Now I was ready for the empowering women books. I was ready to be a boss, my own boss and I have seen a lot of Rachel Hollis on insta and people mentioning reading her book so I thought I’d give it a try. Her message is good, she’s definitely not a born writer and she contradicts herself a lot but like I said, if you can stand the whole thing being a humble brag. She has definitely had her share of bad reviews, mostly people saying that when she wrote the book , she didn’t put into consideration people with disabilities are not able to do some of the things she suggests. Others cannot stand that she basically highlights her success and tells her story through the eyes of her super rich lifestyle like the champagne problems of when your nutritionist tells you you are eating the wrong foods. Like the average person sends their whole family to a nutritionist. She is a tough love type of “get out there and do it” kind of style so if you aren’t into that then this book isn’t for you but if you don’t mind that drill sergeant style her book Girl Wash your Face is for you.
