best baby registry items

Must have baby registry things you need now.

After my first, I realized they have a billion and one baby items that you don’t need in this world. You quickly realize you don’t need that pacifier holder that clicks and lights up and vibrates to soothe the baby. Especially if your kid never takes to a pacifier in the first place. I had a bunch of bottles I never used because my kids wouldn’t drink from them. After three children, you know your must-have’s by now. Here is my list of must have baby items for your registry.

BOOKS

If you are a new parent, the first thing you want to do is grab a book or two to get you started on this major journey you are about to embark on. When I was little, I always remember my parents saying “there’s no book on how to raise kids.” These days, there are literally thousands. They all have a different approach or parenting style and some can be pretty extreme. Also, since the American Academy of Pediatrics is constantly changing requirements and recommendations based on new research, ANY parenting book written before 2018 is outdated. This goes for anything from product safety recalls, vaccinations and new research that helps to prevent SIDS. These are the first three essential books you need to get you on your way to being an informed parent and help you get a head start to where you feel like you got this.

  1. HypnoBirthing: The Mongan Method, 4th Edition: A Natural Approach to Safer, Easier, More Comfortable Birthing  No matter what approach you are looking at for your birth, this can help. I am a firm believer in this. I had my third child with almost no pain and in an hour. I slept through most of the first and second stage of labor because I would listen to the meditation before bed every night. If you ask me, that Lamaze crap is for the birds. She reteaches you to accept your birth as something your body is built to do. She first starts with letting go of all fear. She states that the fear is what brings pain and with Hypnobirthing you can truly have a pain free birth. This book comes with a meditation CD that is filled with positive pregnancy affirmations.
  2. Solve Your Child’s Sleep Problems by Richard Ferber – this has been a lifesaver. Some people have called his method but if you read it front to back and follow his method to a T, you will have a 1 year old that will lay down in his crib and go to sleep at bedtime. Yes this is a fact. He introduces a method in which he calls the progressive waiting approach where you pick an amount of time to wait and go into settle the baby down and you continue to wait that amount of time for that night. The next night you add on 1 minute until the baby falls asleep. Just as you think you are about to loose your mind, the baby has got it! With all three of my children, they were laying down and sleeping on day 3. You need this book even if you don’t think you will have sleep problems. Dr. Ferber is a pediatric neurologist who specializes in sleep. I “Ferberized” all of my children with the Ferber method of sleep and so glad I did because to this day, they have very good sleep habits.
  3. Baby 411 by Dr. Ari Brown and Denise Fields – This is by for the best “baby book” ever written. It is written by a Pediatricians and loaded with tons of research. Since the American Academy of Pediatrics is constantly changing requirement and recommendations ANY parenting book written before 2018 is outdated. I bought the current edition of this book every time I had a baby, and I had a baby every 5 years so yes, I had to buy all three books with each new addition. I love the way it is written with such straight forwardness and straight up logic. It is so easy to look something up real quick, even if it is about the color of your baby’s poop! This book is guaranteed to save you a trip to the doctors at least once.

BABY GEAR

  1. Moby wrap– this is the best for newborns and infants. It helps with bonding and you can breastfeed in it and no one knows! So not only is it a hands free breastfeeding apparatus, it aids in your bonding with the baby. Anyone can wear the baby, even Dad! I have tried other carriers and nothing feels as secure as this. It is soft and molds to your body. You can use it with older babies and it has other positions where you can wear it on the hip and back but I only used it with the infants. I loved popping the baby in here as opposed to lugging that heavy infant carrier car seat around.
  2. Halo Bath Sponge – I never felt the need to have a separate baby bath tub. I just don’t understand why you would need such a huge thing just to give a baby a five minute bath when you can just use your own. I mean, if you live in an apartment and you don’t have a bathtub then I can understand why you would need that but then you have the issue of storage. I just used a big sponge the baby laid on in my tub. I never understood the whole baby bath thing. All you need is a sponge that acts as a bed. It’s easy to store and it’s less than $10! If you are gun ho on having the tub this will be great for use in the baby bathtub as well. It’s comforting for them. Infatnts hate baths because when they get out, it’s cold!
  3. Baby Jogger City Mini – Before I was a parent, I was a nanny – in New York City. I have used several strollers across multiple terrains. Trust me, you want tires that are like a bike or car tire. This is by far the best stroller on the market. It can be controlled with one hand, the turning radius is insane and you can fold it with ONE HAND! It has shocks so when you are rolling over rocks the baby’s cheeks aren’t jiggling which also make it a very great stroller for soothing a colicky baby or for just putting them to sleep. It has a pull strap and it folds in a cinch (with one hand, did I mention you can fold this with one hand?) I can open my trunk with baby in one hand, fold the stroller up and throw it in the back of the car with the other. This is one of these things where you get what you pay for. Trust me, this one is worth it.
